The small, unillustrated hand-out sent me for comment, struck me as having no "appeal" to people. Although the facts are there, our objective is not just to provide people facts - but to pursuade them that the issues laid before them require their help in resolving. We are all inundated with appeals for help to save something or somebody. The Harveys must be on every conservation organization mailing list in the country: whales, horses, baby harp seals, Jacques Cousteau, Wilderness Society, Sierra Club, National Parks, National Forests, poor people, blind people, handicapped people, unjustly treated people! All good causes. Somehow, CRCUP has to present something to people which will help them make a choice in our favor - in spending their money. If you will note, CAP has made its appeal on the basis of Rare and Endangered species and lost rivers versus dams! I think we have a real opportunity to come full force for protecting entire ecosystems. But show what this means'. We have the issues - on the Uinta streams and Utah Lake. Let's use these larger issues. It may be that in Utah you people will like to use a less tough approach but for my purposes of reaching a national constituency, the simple hand-out you prepared will make no appeal at all. I do not favor developing a 50 page booklet with detailed background. For our purposes now - that of developing an active constituency - we need something dramatic - something unlike a document or book - something where illustrations carry out the text - for quick grasping of issues. Blackwelder tells me that Conservation Groups do develop separate and different hand-outs for their purposes. So it may be that you will want to develop two types of membership appeals - one for Utah - one for national use. for If you are not in favor of my material as suggested, Utah, with revisions you consider worthwhile, then let me go ahead and have my appeal prepared for national use, anyway.
