You can see that structural water development on the South Slopes of the Uintas is only a small part of what is planned for Utah. Dams already exist on the North Slope and the BuRec is planning more. W.Fk. Blacks Fork continues this process. All major rivers in Utah are under examination for development - and I do not know which are to be developed by the State and which by the Bureau. All have important wildlife habitat resources or recreation value: the Bear River/ Malad River are prime wildlife habitats - and are associated with migratory nesting and resting. Marshes associated with Bear Lake, also. Water developments will destroy these resources. The Green, Colorado and San Juan Rivers are all on the books for developments - with threats to everything of value including R & E species. The White River was proposed for Wild and Scenic River study before it was removed from the study list by BOR before 1975. Its floodplains are essential habitat for a resident deer herd using side canyons and uplands above the river on and around the oil shale area. Raptors utilize the cliffs - and Peregrine Falcon nests exist above the river. The annual flooding provides the bottomland habitat for Canada geese and the floodplain vegetation provides varying habitat types for many varieties of birds. There has been nosatisfactory research completed to determine the presence of the R & E Colorado Squawfish |
