A During May and June of each year, the snow melts in the mountains and causes the river to raise. Q When a raise comes in the river by reasons of rains, does that given you any material assistance in the operation of the boats? A None whatever; makes it worse. Q And why is that? A Because it come in with such a rush, sometimes builds a bar clear across the river; very difficult to get across it. Sometimes we have to wait a day or so far better conditions, if it is possible, and no hurry to the trip. BY THE SPECIAL MASTER: Q In normal conditions, with the big boat, which is easier to navigate, up or down the stream? A Make more miles per hour going downstream with the current, but in case we get on a bar it is more difficult to get off going down stream than coming up, because the current keeps showing you on the bar tighter all the time. Q So far as case of navigation with this large boat is con-cerned, leaving out the question of speed, do I understand you to say it is easier to navigate up than to navigate down? A Ordinarily going up stream we run on to a bar, we can back off of it and try it again, but in numerous cases we have 3140 |
