Show P. Galloway- D 1128 had any experience in navigation"-- BY MR. BLACKMAR: Q Go ahead now and tell just about your operation through Cataract canyon, how you took this party through, and what you did. A The first part of the trip, really the first rapids we came to we run them. Q Did you run them light, or did you run them loaded? A We run them with all our loads in the boats. I might mention, these boats were well decked boats that Mr. Eddy had, so we could run in waves where they was pretty big. We were there in high water, so we didn't have so many rocks to contend with as we would in lower water. I think about the fifth rapid in the cataracts is where had our most trouble. We had to unload everything and line our boats around the fifth rapid. From there on we ran the rapids until we got to the last rapid in the cataracts; that is Dark canyon rapids, I think is what that is called. When we lined that one. Q When you lived boats down there, did you line them loaded, or line them light? A We always unloaded some of our duffle, not all of it every time, but nearly all the heaviest part of our equipment. Q When was it you were through cataract canyon prior to that time? A I can't give the date and the year; I went through there with 3100 |
