Show Baldwin- D 1182 A If running regularly, wouldn't be much for the other men to do, because running regularly. I would know very near where to go; but I would kind of get off my course lots of times, and get stock. Q Did you discard this Manila rope you carried on the first trip? A Oh, yes; we found we had to get a steel line, about five hundred foot line, so we could pull it through the water easier; going to shore we would always have to put the line in the small boat, coil it up in that small boat and reel it out as we go along, so the current wouldn't carry the boat down stream; first thing we know, we wouldn't have any line, the time we got to the bank. Q How frequently did you have to put that line ashore in order to get off these sandbars? A Sometimes go down without using it; other times have to use it four or five times, probably. THE SPECIAL MASTER: None of these witness have spoken about using anchors for the purpose of holding the boats or lining them. Was the use of anchors unknown on this river? MR. BLACKMAR: I don't think men like Mr. Galloway, and people engaged in that occupation, ever used an anchor. THE SPECIAL MASTER: Mr. Baldwin makes no mention of any anchors on any of these boats. 3154 |
