Show Baldwin- D 1183 BY MR. BLACKMAR: Q Did you have anchors on any of these boats? A Yes, we had an anchor. Q On which boat? A On the big boat. Q How large an anchor is it? A Probably wouldn't weigh over one hundred and twenty- five pounds. Q Is it built in the conventional form? A Yes, regular anchor. Q What did you use that for? A It is very important, a fellow breaks a chain that goes back to the paddle wheel, don't want to drift on down stream very far; throw out the anchor, and the boat will turn around, up streams; this anchor will dig in the bottom of the river, and hold the boat there until you get the repair made. Q What else did you use that anchor for? A A great many times, where we got stuck, we haven't been in a position to get the line to the bank, to pull in the right direction we wanted to go, so we take the anchor out in a small boat, throw it over, and hitch our line on to that; it would help hold the boat up stream in the position we wanted to go.
