Show Prommel- RD 1037 BY THE SPECIAL MASTER: Q What is that last? A It is not as difficult to get off a sandbar coming up the river as down the river. Q You say it is easier to navigate up the river so far as sand-bars are concerned? A Oh, no. I didn't quite catch what you meant. The sandbar going down stream, the water very gradually gets shallower, then the sand rolls over and the water all of a sudden becomes deep; therefore when the boat strikes the bar going up stream, the end part of the boat is in deep water and the paddle wheel can work in deep water, and pull off. MR. BLACKMAR: That is all. FURTHER EXAMINATION BY SPECIAL MASTER: Q I should suppose that made it easier to go upstream than to go down, so far as sandbars are concerned, if you got more water at the lower end of the sandbar you wouldn't stick so hard, would you? A No, you wouldn't stick so hard. 3009 |
