Show Baldwin- D 1160 inches. Q I don't quite understand that. Dose that mean the paddle wheel never extended down into the water more than eighteen inches when loaded? A The paddles of the wheel were only a foot across, that is, they were clear across the wheel, twelve feet, but they were only foot boat; we put them in the water so they would be buried about three inches over the top of the paddle. Q Was the boat so loaded forward, no matter how heavy it was loaded, so the paddle wheel never got down more than eighteen inches, is that what you mean? A Yes. BY MR. BLACKMAR: Q How did you accomplish that in loading the boat? A The wheel beams, you might call them, extent over the back of the boat a distance of half way of the wheel, or a little more, so we to have some clearance between the wheel and the boat; consequently while the boat as empty the beam projected over the back; it would be a little lower if the front end of the boat is loaded heavily; it brings the front and down and the back end up a little, that is, out at the center of the wheel; consequently you don't change the position of the paddle wheels very much, maybe two pr three inches or three or four inches at the outside, probably, in depth. 3132 |
