Show Baldwin- D 1161 BY MR. FARNSWORTH: Q Do I understand the paddles didn't go down lower than the bottom of the boat? A No, not quite as low, anything. BY MR. BLACKMAR: Q Now, up to February, 1925, had you had any experience in the operation of boats on the Colorado river? A No, sir. Q Had you ever been on the river? A On the Colorado river, you mean? Q Yes. A No-- Yes, I had; I had made a trio or two with this Evinrude boat; went down the river for pleasure trip, hunting deer; but we didn't find it very much pleasure. Q What do you mean by that? A Well, because of the difficulty in getting any place while on the boat. We would get stuck on a bar. If the propellor would happen to hit a rock or anything, it would shear a little pin of-- fixed to shear off, so it wouldn't tear up the motor. This Evinrude motor was equipped with a water pump to keep it cool, plunger pump; it wouldn't work because the sand in the river would get around this pump and clog it up. Q What kind of cooling system did you have on the big boat? A We finally discovered a way to submerge some pipes on the outside of the boat so the water from the river would keep 3133 |
