Show Baldwin- D 1159 others were flat- bottom. Q When was this large, flat- bottom boat built? Built in February, 1925. Q Did you help in the construction of that boat? A With the construction of the motive power I did; helped build the engine and paddle wheel, I mean place the machinery in the boat. Q Just describe that paddle wheel that was on that boat. A It is eight feet high and twelve feet across, twelve feet wide, with twelve paddles on it. Q How much water did it draw? MR. FARNSWORTH: Did it draw, did you say? MR. BLACKMAR: Yes. A The back end of the barge we always had to figure it about the same depth, as near as we could, whether empty or loaded, so as to have the paddle wheel the proper distance in the mater; the back of the boat would probably be eighteen inches in the water. BY THE SPECIAL MASTER: Q In the water? A In the water; when loaded it would probably be two or three inches deeper; by putting our load on the front end of the boat, bring the front end of the boat down and not change the back of the boat much, so it would leave the paddle wheel about the same, so the paddle would be covered in the water nicely, probably wouldn't be under more than fifteen 3131 |
