The principal building consists of 2 basic zones laid out in an L-shaped floor plan. The north wing of the building consists of spaces originally intended for large group activities including an auditorium on the main level and a lunch room below. The south wing consists of classroom space originally designed as -tour large equally sized roams. Each wing of the building is accessed by separate main entries, both richly articulated with pre-cast concrete elements. Fenestration on the north wing is vertically oriented by the use of tall round top windows while the south wing is pierced by large horizontal rectangular openings. The exterior brick parapet walls are topped by a continuous pre-cast concrete cap which wrap the entire perimeter of the building. The pre-cast concrete elements of the building are influenced by Art Deco styles prominent in the 1930's and 40's. The interior of the building retains many of its original architectural elements including doors, transom panels, railings, trim, and molded plaster elements in the audi tor ilDl. 5. Architect/Builder: Ashton & Evans Architects/ Date of Construction: 1930 Salzner & Thompson Write a chronological history of the property, focusing primarily on the original or principal owners & significant events. Built on the site of the original Crescent Elementary School, the present building is comprised of elements from three major building periods. The original four room school, built circa 1920, was retrofited in 1926 with modern plumbing and heating facilities. This required the addition of a heating plant at the rear of the building. This addition contained a boiler on the lower level and restroom on the main level tied to the classroom area. In 1930 the original school was demolished to make way for a larger facility which contained 4 large classrooms, an auditorium, a large lunchroom, a library, and other support spaces. The rear heating plant/ restroom addition was retained and the new school was designed to accomodate its location. In 1954 another wing was added to the south side of the structure which contains four classrooms, rest rooms , and administration offices. Crescent Elementary School played an integral part in the lives of those who lived in the Crescent area. The original school was built in order to keep all children in the Crescent area from being split-up and sent to other schools in the area. The new school, completed in 1930, was built for the same reason - to keep Crescent's school children in one location. Since the school contained a large auditorium complete with a stage, balcony, and projection room, it became a community center serving civic, religious, and private groups and clubs. Events held at the school include dances, scouting events, LOS ward socials, plays, halloween and christmas parties, senior citizen dinners, and Lions Club meetings among many others.
