Sandy. Salt Lake County. UT Narrative Description The main building of the Crescent Elementary School is a brick structure influenced by the Art Deco style and built in 1930. It is a one story building with a flat roof and is L-shaped in plan. The north wing has a foyer, an auditorium, and a lunchroom on the lower level. The south wing consists of four large classrooms. In 1954 additional classrooms were built next to the south wing. Fortunately, the large addition does adversely affect the historic integrity of the original building. The building is constructed of dark brown brick on a concrete foundation. The brick laid in a running bond with one soldier and one rowlock course just above the foundation. The Art Deco decorative elements .. of building are of beige cast concrete, including the parapet coping on all . four sides of the structure. Approximately five feet below the coping is a string course of the same material. This course is broken every eight feet by brick pilasters which rise from the foundation to the parapet. The pilasters are flanked by a column of stacked bricks above a cast concrete block. The window and door surrounds are also of beige cast concrete. The principal (east) elevation has two entrances. The one on the north (projecting) wing is rectangular with a recessed surround and double doors. The twelve panes of glass in each door have been removed, but the six transom lights are extant. Above the entrance is a small coupled window. This portion of the facade is symmetrical. To the south, the main entrance has a different design. Here a semicircular arch of seven window lights is above the double doors. The surround has fluted vertical members, rectangular blocks, and triangular elements. The triangle motif has also been tooled into the cast concrete at the parapet (capital) of the brick pilasters. The fenestration also differs between the two wings. The north wing has eighteen pane vertical windows crowned by semicircular windows and set on concrete sills. Pairs of these vertical windows alternate with pairs of brick pilasters on the north elevation. There are also six smaller nine pane rectangular windows with concrete lintels and sills. The windows on the south windows are large multiple pane window walls which light the classrooms. These are also surrounded by cast concrete with a decorative block just below the sills . ~ See continuation sheet |
