Show 42 43 NELS AUGUST NELSON and FIDELIA ELLEN KOFFORD NELSON Nels August Nelson was born May 18,1857 in Eringa, Halland Lan, Sweden. His parents were John Nel::;on who was born October 7,1827 in Tennesea, Eringa, Sweden and Annetta Benson, born December 9,1832. They were married in 1852. Th-e family came to Utah October 18 1864 in the Captain Horne Company, having been converted' to the gospel in Sweden. They settled in Logan, Cache Co. and were the parents of 11 children. ( Left Sweden April 10,1864) . Nels August was the third son of the above family and walked across the plains when his lamily family carne came to Utah. He was then only 7 years of age so knew kne\N the hardships of the pioneering life. He received a meager schooling in the Logan schools as the family had to work to make a living after making the long journey to this Country. He met and married Fidelia Ellen Kofford Kolford January 24 1884 in the Endowment Endo\Nment House in Sail Salt Lake City. ' In the spring of 1885 he bought 7 acres of land from William G. Taylor in Crescent and proceeded to make a home here. He built a brick home on the east of State Street at what is now 10300 South State. He helped to build the East Jordan Canal from which he irrigateCl his farm. He was a very enterprising man and liked to buy land. He owned more land in Crescent than any other person. He bought some land up close to the mountains and raised cattle and pastured them there . His family were mostly boys so they farmed many acres of land. When the school district built a new school house for the community Mr: Nels:0:' bou~ht the North school house, and property which adjOined his hiS farm. He moved into the school house later on as he needed more room for his family. It was on this property that the Ward celebrations were held under the shade of the trees. He was surely a community builder and booster. He was a faithful and ardent worker in the Church. When the ward was organized in 1896 he was sustained as the Ward Clerk which he held for 17 years. He was Sunday School Superintendent for 22 years; Ward Teacher for 24 years and President of the Y.M.M.I.A. for some time; High Councilman in the Stake for 11 years and was on the Finance Committee of the L.D.S. University. He gave his children a college education and sent five of them on L.D. S. Missions. Two became College Professors and one was City Judge in Murray. All were faithful workers in the chur.ch .. and community. When his family were all married and had made homes of their own , M r • Nelson Nelson·· sold his property and moved to Sandy where he lived until his death on September 5,1938. Funeral services were held in the Sandy First Ward Chapel and the burial was in the Crescent Cemetery, Sept. ,8,1938. Fidelia Ellen Kolford was the daughter of Paul Ernest Kolford and Fanny Myrick. Th~y were pioneers and came to Utah in 1853 where they made their home down in Ephraim Country. They came in John Forsgren Co. across the Plains. Fidelia was born at Fort Ephraim Utah on April 29,1858. She received her ed~cation there and then attended the B. Y . University where she graduated from the Normal Training Class in 1881. She met and married Mr. Nelson in the Endowment House on January 24,1884. They read and studied together a great deal, not only the scriptures, but national and current events as well. She was a sacrificing and courageous, hard working woman, a devoted wife and mother. March 22,1888 she was made secretary of the Dry Creek Branch of the Draper Ward Releif Society' then was made the first President of the Relief Society whe~ the Crescent Ward was organized, May 28,1896 to 1912. She was first Counselor to Hannah Brown when the iirst Primary was organized, August 19,1891 -1899. When Hannah Brown was rei eased she was made President, 1 899 -1901. She was al so ~~esident of the Y. L . M.I . A. ,and was President of the Religion class; also was a teacher in the Sunday School and Primary. She was a member of the Red Cross Organization during World War 1. They were the parents of the following children: August Levi born - April 27,1885 Lawrence Egbert - born - November 5 1886 Paul Ernest - Born-June 13 1888 ' Apr{1 24 1890 (died in infancy) James Hyrum - Born - Apr"l Virgil Homer - born - May 15, 892 Moses Aaron - born - June 29 1894 Fidelia Ellen - born - October '12 , 1897 i Some time after 1882, one of Mr. Nelson's sisters became incapitated incapilaled due to family difficulties and ill health and lei! four children, so Mr. and Mrs Nelson took them i~to their home and raised and cared for them until they married. They were John, Rose J., William and Joseph Jonas. So they raised a large family. After her husband's death, Mrs Nelson moved to Woods to live with her daughter, Fidelia, until her death which occured Monday, January 31,1938. Funeralservices Funeral services were held at !he Des~ret Mortuary in Salt Lake City, Feb., Feb. J 3,1938. Burial was In the Crescent Cemetery beside her husband. She was 80 years of age. Cr~ss, |
