Sandy. Salt Lake County. UT At the rear of the building. on the west elevation is the oldest portion of the structure: a heating plant and restroom area built in 1926. The heating plant was an addition to the demolished 1905 school building and retained for the construction of the 1930 structure. The ground slopes downward to the west and the basement window wells are visible on the north and-west sides of the building. ~ The 1954 addition. thougH(Hies~in design. is constructed of compatible materials. A similar color of brick was used. and the metal cornice and window surrounds match the cast concrete in color. The one story addition is set back from the main building by about eight feet and visually impacts the 1930 building only from the south. On the interior of the 1930 school. the north wing entrance opens to a vestibule which leads to the auditorium. A balcony and :projection room above the vestibule are no longer used. A stage at the west end of the auditorium was converted to classrooms in 1989. Below the auditorium on the lower level is a large lunchroom. kitchen. and the library. Much of the original woodwork is still intact in this wing. These elements include doors. transom panels. railings. newel posts. and trim. The auditorium retains many of its molded plaster elements. including the procemium arch. The lunchroom is currently being used as an art room. The original Dutch doors. cupboards. metal sinks. and ceramic tiles are extant. however little can be seen due to the large kilns now occupying the kitchen. The original library is now a classroom. The entrance on the south wing also has a vestibule space with the faculty office nearby. Perpendicular to the vestibule is a long hallway accessing the four classrooms and terminating in a transition to the 1954 building. The hallway has seen little alteration. other than missing the hooks in the coat alcoves. The classrooms have been modified: acoustic tile has been applied to the ceiling and fluorescent lights have been installed. but the rooms still have their high ceilings. One classroom has been divided in half. forming a health room and a book room. At the time of the 1954 addition. the classrooms in the older building were modernized and the entire building was painted and refinished. Most of the interior seems little altered since this refurbishing. The 1954 structure added four classrooms, office space and two more restrooms to the school. ~ See continuation sheet |
