Ita walla are of I. cally made aunbaked adobe. Much of the interior woodwork, thou,h pine, ia uniquely grained to resemble beautiful hardwooda. The frugality and far-ai,hted geniua of Brigham Young are ahown by the fact that aome of the furniture was made from packing boxea, fashioned for the weatward trek from fine hardwood which the pioneera reuaed after their arrival in the Salt Lake Valley. Above the entrance ia mounted a reclining Britiah lion. Thia figure givea the mansion the name by which it ia known around the world. In 1964 thia unique atructure was declareel a national hiatorical landmark. After many yeara of serving the community, and after many changea in the builclin,'a phyaical atructure, the Lion Houae needed extenaive renovating. It waa cloaed in 1963 for a period of five yeari during which time reatorative work was accompliahed. Life in thia pioneer home revolved around the lar,e front parlor to the weat of the entrance on the main 8oor. Here the family held their daily prayen and met together to receive counsel from the head of the family. In moat every detail the room now is as it was when u.ed by Brigham Young.
