Show 1970 HIGHLIGHTS IN REVIEW JANUARY ' President David O. McKay, ninth president of the Church, died Jan. 18 at age 96. He had served as president for nearly 19 years. President Joseph Fielding · Smith became the 10th president with Harold B. Lee and N. Eldon Tanner as counselors. MAY The venerable Beehive House in Salt Lake City, Brig1;lam Young's home for 25 years, was made a national historic site. More than 100,000 visitors tour the home each year. SEPTEMBER President and Mrs. Joseph Fielding Smith visited Hawaii where he spoke to students, missionaries and at . Oahu Stake Conference. They visited the temple and Polynesian Cultural Center. President Smith and President N. Eldon Tanner participated in the cornerstone placing at Ogden Temple. ..... •• ~ t· .. .. •• ", FEBRUARY ' Elder Howard W. Hunter of the Council of the Twelve was named Church historian, succeeding President Joseph Fielding Smith. Assistant historians are A. William Lund and Earl E. Olsen. President Smith served as Church historian for 49 years. Sixteen new regions were organized to meet the needs of the growing Church. Myrthus W. Evans was the ~rst of four new temple presidents to be named during 1970. He was called to preside at the Los Angeles Tem- pIe. Presidents were also named to the Arizona, St. George and Idaho Falls temples. JUNE Names of many missions and stakes were changed to provide more uniformity and more adequately designate the areas involved. Forty-one new stakes and four new missions were created in the Church during 1970. Membership of the Church is 2.9 million. OCTOBER The Media Fair held in connection with the 140th Semi-Annual Conference drew thousands of visitors to see exhibits, films, displays and demonstrations from most organizations of the Church. |
