Show Beehive House In its modern restoration the beautiful Beehive house reverU to the authentic 19th century pioneer home teat Brigham Young built in 1854.Architect Truman O. Angell" who also designed the Salt Lake Temple, designed the homei., a 19th Century Greek r~vival style. The main part of the house consisted of t\:lO stories and an attic, surmounted by the unusual beehive shQ,ed cupola which was the "Mormon" symbol of industry~ )Atteel railed widows walk surrounds the cupola. Since Brigham Youngs death the home has undergone t\-/O major alterations. The rear secti on was rebui 1t into a th ree storey wi ng in 1888 and the formal dining room was extens i ve 1yremode lIed. The waHs are of adobe, the floors of wide pine boards laid with square nails. the interior of the house has beautiful ornately carved woodwork in its wainscotting, fretwork and bannisters done by ~10rmon pioneer craft~men. In 1850 a nlnefoot high cobble rock wall was erected to protedt the home from unfriendly intruders and as a make work project for men who needed employment. Portions of this wall now border the home on the north and eas t sides. 9uring the life Of Brl9ha~ Young, many famous people were entertained ' In' the home including President Ulysses S. Grant, Emperor Oom Pedro of Brazil, Gen. \.Jilliam T. Sherman, Ralph Horace ~Jaldo Emerson, Mark Twain~ Jay Gould and Greely~ In 1893 the ' Church prestdents~ pur~hased ; t to make it the off; c; at res i dence of its Only two were to live in it, Lorenzp .,SnowandJoseph F.
