OF SURVEY RE=~ FERRED TO CHAIRMAN AND EXECUG Allen and Hamilton, Business Service of San FranciSCO, l had called on him and later on the President: and discussed. the matter of a survey and study of the University in line with the Governofls recommendation of some months ago (56*? minutes July and August» Chairman O"Connor was of the opinion that if the Governor desired that such a study should be made, if Tl‘VE COM- MlTTEE may be wise, particularly if made by a reputable firm which has made similar surveys of Columbia, New York University and other large educational and industrial institutions through~ out the country At a meeting last Saturday with President Olpin, representatives of the firm had with them copies of surveys that their firm had made of other schools. They were, in the main, studies of the administrative functions of the institutions, but due to their confidential nature could not be thoroughly reviewed. During the discussion it was proposed that Regent O"Con- I nor pursue the matter further with the Governor and report at ' the next meetingof the Board. Chairman O"Connor stated that criticism of the University has made an impression on many people of the State, and a survey, which he thought would be complimentary to the University, should'improve its public relations .Regent Culp expressed the opinionthat the cost could be justified and the survey should be started at once, Regent Bennion moved that the matter be referred to the Chairman and the Executive Committee to pursue further and report to the Board at the next meeting, Regent McShane seconded the motion which carried" FACULTY PUBLlCATIONS RECOGNTEZED Faculty publications as listed in Appendix Three were recognized with commendation on action of Regent Bowen sec"-= onded by Regent Culpo it was suggested that an explanatory statement accompany each of the technical and scientific publications designed to give a general understanding of the material° Regent Bowen moved that letters be written to contributing staff members in recognition of their. efforts Motion was seconded by Regent Bennion and carried, Regent McShane called attention to a matter of great concern to him with reference to the large number of high school " graduates who are unable to carry regular college courses of study without makeup work in such subjects as mathematics and English, This throws a burden on the University as special instruction must be provided in subjects that should have been i |
