The Utah State Historical Society approved the nomination of the Clark Lake National Historic District. The nomination will now go to the United States Department of Interior for application to the National Register of Historic Places. The district includes 25 homes from 200 West to 400 West State Street. The Clark Lane Historical Preservation Association was formed by local homeowners in 1992 to complete the research and paper work required for the nomination. In 1993, the group orgimized Farmington' s first Street Festival to raise the money needed to complete the final documentation for the District. David Barney, a spokesman for the group, said the . area is an example of the pioneer principle of the United Order, because it represents the farms and busi~s begun by early settler Ezra T. Clark. The enter- prises were run by his family, which included three wives and 21 children, with all the profits being held in common. In this neighborhood was the boyhood home of Obert Clark Tanner, 291 W. State, founder of the O.C. Tanner Jewelry establishment said Barney. O.C. Tanner' s grandfather,. Ezra Thompson Clark, was one of Farmington's first settlers, said Barney. He said homeowners would benefit by the designation through formal recognition and protection from state and federal construction projects. Also, he said, the ineasure stabilizes the neighborhood, stimulates increased owner-occupancy as opposed to renting by making it a district and desirable place to live, and increases property values. Also, the Utah State Legislatu.re passed in 1993, a state income tax ·credit of 20 percent for the rehabilitation of National Register homes, said Barney . The United States Department of Interior will take six to eight w~eks to review the nomination. " ' - ' -_ ! h.'-- ! |
