Show \ 7425 Wolverton- C 5404 Q Had you had any difficulty with the river that made it desirable for a light draft boat to be used, and if so, what difficulty had you had? A No, we had no real difficulty, but it is a constant strain, for instance, sandbars or rocks. Q Beg pardon? A It is a constant strain on one, dodging obstructions in the river. Q What kind of obstructions? A Well, such as sandbars or rocks. Q Are you always successful in dodging them? A After Mr. Wheeler quit, R. C. Wheeler, as pilot, I wasn't always successful in dodging rocks and sandbars. I don't ever remember having touched a rock, but once; but for the first year or two after Mr. Wheeler quit we touched sandbars now and then. Q Did you occasionally get stuck on them? A No. Q Maybe you and I don't understand the work " stuck" the same. Did you occasionally get on them to the extent you had to use some kind of power to get off, either poles or oars, or get in the river and push off? A No, we usually let the water wash us off. Q But occasionally you did use oars or poles, something of that kind, to get off? |
