Show I- 2 7409 5388 Wolverton- D couldn't compete commercially with the short haul, for instance, from Greenriver to Moab. With the river in its present con-dition we couldn't very well handle larger boats. Q Did you spend any money for advertising or in any way to attract tourists there? A No. Q You had no capital for such a purpose? A No. Q And you say, so far as the freight feature of it was concerned, with the boats that you were able to use on the river you could not compete with the short haul across from Moab to Greenriver? MR. BLACKMAR: That is purely repetition. MR. FARNSWORTH: I want to understand the witness. I may be excused for repeating once in a while. A No. BY MR. FARNSWORTH: Q Why couldn't you build larger scows that would take say one hundred tons and by operating larger boats compete with the land haul? A We couldn't do that, for the reason that the river in is natural condition wouldn't allow the handling of a one hundred ton scow; ( here and there a rock in the riffles that would need to be removed.) Another thing, we didn't have the capital; we couldn't earn money enough to warrant the building of larger boats. |
