WOLVERTON, was thereupon recalled by the defendant for further direct examination, and having been heretofore duly sworn herein, testified as follows: FURTHER DIRECT EXAMINATION BY MR. FARNSWORTH: THE SPECIAL MASTER: You were examining him on those photographs when we adjourned last night. BY MR. FARNSWORTH: Q Mr. Wolverton, when did you cease your operations with your boats wherein you carried passengers and freight for compensation? A Late in 1912. Q Why did you quit, Mr. Wolverton? A We couldn't make it pay. BY MR. BLACKMAR: Q couldn't what? THE SPECIAL MASTER: " Couldn't make it pay". BY MR. FARNSWORTH: Q Just what do you mean by that statement? A Well, we didn't receive money that we considered paid us for the investment of building the boats, and the effort. The parties that we took out -- we would take one out probably at the present time, and another party perhaps a month late; with the boats that we had, which we could afford to build, we |
