Show I- 9 7438 5417 Wolverton- RD REDIRECT EXAMINATION BY MR. FARNSWORTH: Q Wait; I want to ask you some questions about that letter. I see your statement here, " The rivers indicated are not navigable on a commercial basis, but under stress of necessity certain stretches may be negotiated with light draft boats of certain types." What do you mean by that statement there, that these rivers are not navigable on a commercial basis? What do you call a commercial basis? A Under present conditions of the river, unimproved as it is, we can not compete in carrying freight on the long haul between Greenriver and Moab with trucks, or the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad and trucks on the short haul; neither can we carry passengers. That was my idea. Q Neither can you carry passengers,-- what do you mean by that? A We can't carry passengers and compete with the railroad and trucks or buses. Q Couldn't carry them at the same prices, do you mean? A No, we couldn't carry them at the same price. Q Where have you ever seen many thousand tons of rock fall? |
