Show 4026 Zahn- D 2046 Q How much did this sluicing hopper weigh? A About two hundred and fifty pounds. Q From what point did that come into the San Juan river? A It came in by freight wagon down within about fifteen miles up the river from my camp, probably maybe eighteen miles from my camp up the river, a place they call the Recompense camp; there is an old camp there; it is called now the cottonwoods, on the map. I think it is where one of the big Indian tribes there has homesteaded, you might say, at Hoskannini. Q After it got down the the river, what kind of boat or raft did you have there to put it on? A I constructed a raft with bits of drift timber, wood that lay about on the river bank, and made a raft probably about twelve or fourteen feet long, and probably about five or six feet wide, and I think I just tied it together with just baling wire. Q How many miles was that above your camp? A I should judge about fifteen miles, maybe sixteen. Q Did you have any help on that? A No -- pardon me -- I had help, to have the hopper put on the raft; I don't just remember,-- probably an Indian or some man out of a freight wagon, something of that sort. Q Now just tell me about the progress of this sluice |
