Show 3995 Kane- D 2015 higher water. We ran with all the men and all the supplies in the boats through those rapids. Any time we could run a boat through without portaging or taking out the stuff, we didn't call it much of a rapid, but it was shallow water for some distance. Q Do you recall anything with reference to the rapid at Trachyte creek? A Trachyte, as I recollect, was the worst rapid we had along that part of the country. Q How did it compare with the condition of the rapid when you were there the previous December? A Not so bad, on account of a little higher water; long, swift chute that was crooked; we dragged the boats several times along there, that is, we struck on the bottoms, bumped on the bottoms a number of places through there. BY THE SPECIAL MASTER: Q Did you row? A We had to row; on swift water you have to beat the current to steer a boat a all. Q You had plenty of water on either side, did you? A No, we had to take this rough water. Q You had cars ten feet long; nine to ten feet long? A Yes. Q So you must have had plenty water on either side to use your cars, didn't you? |
