A Had to dig down in the bed of the river for the water, and keep digging deeper every two or three days. Q Then the hole that you dug would fill up with water? A There would be a sump hold put into them, a revolving screen to keep it from caving in, about five or six feet in diameter, to hold the sides up; we dug down about ten feet deep altogether. Q That year did you have occasion to go down the river while the river was dry? A Yes. Q Just tell me the circumstances of that. A The cook apparently lost his mind, and wandered down the river during the night, and so we got two white men on horseback, accompanied by Indians, and found him down close to the Colorado, so one of the white men came back and notified us; they said he was very weak.
