Show 4025 Zahn- D 2045 A It would cut out the packing of the pumps; they would refuse to have suction, you might say, suction power. Q Did that occur the whole year round, or were there periods when it did not occur? A Practically the whole year, any time we operated. BY THE SPECIAL MASTER: Q How long did you operate? A I don't quite remember, but probably just three or four weeks in the summer, you say in August. Q You mean you only operated three or four weeks in all? A I think as far as the time I was there, yes. Q Then you don't know anything about the sand except at that time? A Well, it has always troubled us, the sand and sediment that is in the water cuts the pumps, -- the packing in the pumps. BY MR. BLACKMAR: Q Were you back there the next year? A I think I was, yes, 1905. Q At one time did you use the river to transport some machinery down there? A As far as my recollection, it wasn't much machinery, it was a sluicing hopper; it was in the year 1905. Q What else besides a sluicing hopper? A I think nothing else, that I recollect. |
