Show 3949 Edwards- RD 1969 A We called it the Big Rock rapid, No. 25. BY MR. BLACKMAR: Q 248. A Cranberry point, Cataract canyon. Q As a matter of information, Mr. Edwards, what kind of trees are those in the foreground? A Cottonwood, as I remember it. When Stanton's party want through in 1889, across the river from here ( indicating), they found a half barrel of cut loaf sugar. While we were camped here we crossed to see if we could find any of it. Digging around in the sand we found a case of a dozen quart jars of cranberry jam. The date on the box said it had been put up in 1836. We broke several of the jars, and took the balance back to camp, and found it a welcome addition to our fare. We also found the remains of a wagon box, and the bone of a human leg. BY THE SPECIAL MASTER: Q Where? A At this same point. Q You named that Cranberry point? A We named that Cranberry point. Q Where did you say you found this box with the jars of cranberry jam? A In the sand; dug it out of the sand in the low water; evidently had come from up the river somewhere, and been lost |
