Show 3992 Kane- D 2012 we managed each time to get carried across by the other boat to another place on the other side; we could walk one side or the other most everywhere, but a number of places we had to ride in the boat for a little distance, sometimes a mile or two, to where we could walk, and where the water was anyways rough for the boat we walked. BY THE SPECIAL MASTER: Q That boat with eight men in it must have drawn a good deal of water? A They did; they were boats that would carry a big weight, though; these air- tight compartments in the top all the way around, every inch they went down would afford more resistance to weight. Q They were filled with supplies? A No, along each end of each boat there was watertight compartment; these air- tight cans were made our of zine; heavy zinc, and they had a top like a screw top to can and a gasket on it; screw that tight and keep the stuff we didn't want to get wet in there, but no provisions, just clothing and photograph stuff and surveying tools. BY MR. BLACKMAR: Q That boat, as I understand it, was sunk at rapid 13? A Yes. Q Could you tell me about how many miles it was from rapid 13 to the end of the cataracts? |
