A Well, on the upper -- above Grand Junction different places, just small row boats, flat bottom light boats, because there is not much water in the country, rocky and shallow. From Grand Junction down we had just a common raft, made of four logs. We were in Grand Junction -- I had been prospecting around Ouray, and mining, and a man named Jack Summer, who was with Powell's first party, in 1869, was down around that country, and was telling, talked for years about a big mine in the Grand canyon; I had heard about this, and has a little time, and I went down to Grand Junction to see him. He wasn't there, but I got acquainted with Emerson and Duke, and Mr. Emerson suggested, " Let's go down the Grand canyon and see it." He was a grown- up, intelligent man, who didn't know anything about the Grand canyon except what he had heard. I didn't know anything about it, either. BY THE SPECIAL MASTER: Q What year was this?
