Show 3986 Kane- D 2006 A Well, we ran a number of rapids before we had trouble in No. 13; we had run thirteen rapids and gave us no particular trouble, because we stopped at every rapid, never entered any Swift water, at all, of any kind, that we didn't stop and go ahead and pick out a channel, until we ran into this rock in rapid 13. Q What occurred there? A Well, the boat struck the rock, and it was partly turned to miss the rock -- we were pulling as hard as we could to get past this rock -- but the current carried that boat sideways into the rock. When any boat stops in the fast water, it will turn up- side- down, open side up the rivers, invariably. Q Do what? A Turn open- side- up to the current, any boat, if it strikes sideways on a rock and stops a second, it will turn up- side- down, turn up flat- ways. Our boat struck about the middle of the boat on the end of this rock; the rock had a little point something like that( indicating); we were unfortunate for the middle of the boat, the keel of the boat, when it struck, to strike on that point; it was almost a balance; the minute the boat stopped, this swift water washed us over, McDonald steering.
