Show 3963 Kane- D 1983 Q To what extent, Mr. Kane? A Well, before this Stanton trip I had quite a lot of row boat experience on eastern rivers and the Missouri river when I came west, and smaller Colorado rivers, but since that time I have had quite a lot; all the big rivers in Alaska I have been on with row boats. Q What rivers in Alaska have you operated on? A This Yukon river, once all the way through, once part way through; and on Copper river, and on the Tanan, river, and the Susitna river, which is along where the government railroad is now built. Q When old you first enter the Green or the Grand or the Colorado river? A In the fall of 1889, with the Stanton on party. Q previous to that time had you been on the Grand river? A Yes, almost the whole length of the Grand river at different time, prospecting; when I could, I came down the river in my boat; generally, though, had pack horses and saddle horses; but I made a trip from Grand Junction to Moab once with two other men, on a raft. Q Do you recall who those two other men were? A One was Frank W. Emerson, a newspaper man of San Francisco; the other was a salesman, Charles Duke. |
