On the question how it is that the colour of G. septempunctata is so important, and the colour of C. decem-punctata unimportant to the animal, I do not find M r . Wallace offering evidence, and I a m not aware that he has even hazarded a guess. Meanwhile I wish to repeat, in regard to G. variabilis what I said before in the case of C. decempunctata, that its several varieties exhibit that kind of definiteness and constancy to their respective types that we associate with the idea of species; but for supposing that this constancy is in any way dependent on adaptation to environment, we have no warrant. |
