Show Station. We learned that Brent couldn't do it in house - we couldn't use the grant for Forest Service salaries. So Irene Hansen from the Duchesne Chamber of Commerce approached some professors in Logan at Utah State asking if their class would be interested in doing this for a class project. They jumped at the opportunity to work with real people on a real project. So the Department of Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning send professors Ellsworth and Timmons and 36 students from their LAEP 3100 class - Recreation and Open Space Design to Duchesne County. They visited the site on Nov. 3 and 4th - talked to the locals and got a feel for the site. They were then divided into 12 teams and told to tell about their feelings for the site, develop a vision statement, be practical - but visionary and then develop a site plan and include some detailed studies of their choosing. The Forest Service and historical society had presented the students with a wish list what they would like at the site (which include several acres beyond the guard station. Things like a rest room, rest stop, picnic area, ampitheater, river walk, pavilion, museum, group area etc. Last night all 12 teams presented their plans - kind of a long meeting, but they were enthusiastic and it was a lot of fun to see their ideas. I was amazed at how excited they were about this site and they all seemed to have caught the vision and importance of the site. They also have a much better grasp of technology than I do with their slick computer presentations. Almost every group thank the society for this wonderful project. They will package their plans and submit them to Irene. I'll make sure you get a copy of one of these Joe, I sensed serious frustration from the locals with how long its taking to get anything done. I recommend we work closely with the state and historical society to select a plan and get things moving so something can happen this summer -like put in the rest room which Brent says you have. Since none of the plans was - "Wow, I like everything they did!!" I suspect we'll want to pick elements from several of them . So I would like to recommend that we find some funding to have one of the students finalize "a plan" from what we select. There were a lot of great ideas. I would also like to suggest - Nanette may have an intern with an interpretive background this summer. If Lisa comes I would like to steal her for a while to help draft an interpretive plan for the site. She could meet with the historical society and start developing themes - look at the layout of the building interiors - visit the guard station museums in Huntington Canyon and Blacks Fork. I was also wondering how I can get a copy of the information package Irene sent to Utah State. Byron |
