Show to the parking area to the east of the building. The building cost was listed as $1052.85 in 1936. The latrine was built in 1926. The station was used as the s~~er headquarters for the Ranger for about 6 months each year. up to about 1950. It was then part of the Uinta National Forest and used by the following District Rangers: Fred Johnson (19l4-l7) ,Bill Huff (1922-23) ,Frank Richards (1924-42), Julian Thomas (1942-44) ,John McDonald (1945) ,Walter Astle (1946-48), and Earl Roberts (1949-50). The site is close to an old stage stop where , frieght wagons and stages would stop between Duchesne and the railstation at K}~ne. 8. No historic reasearch or archeology work has been done to our knowledge unless Dave Gillio has had time to look into it since his review in 1975. 9. Maintenance needs were discussed in item 2 above, but it appears that $3000.00 to $5000.00 would be needed to get the water system to acceptable standards, reshingle the roof, and other minimum maintenance needs. The bridges that were out have been replaced with large culverts this past fall. There has been some vandelism associated with the site. Two years ago all the cooking and eating utensilis were stolen. 10. With its close proximity to a paved state highway and the historical value of the adjacent old stage stop, it would have .potential for development as an interpertive facility providing funds or volunteer help was available. The station itself could be redecorated with the 1914-1930 furnishing as a show place as to how the Forest Service operated in that era. This combined with the history of the old stage stop could provide for interesting interpretation. ' 11. To our knowledge there are no historical groups that have expressed interest in preserving or interpreting the structure, but likewise none have been approached with the suggestion. 12. With an approved water system design there is an opportunity to upgrade and restore the site with. NYC and Ol~e~ American Manpower. 13. Artifacts as mentioned above are in the structure and other old grazing records, Forest Service Mannual, and other data is available in files at the Duchesne Ranger District Office. 14. Some data, a descriptive sheet prepared in 1936, and some photos are available. The facility is in an existing adminstrative site and recognized in the approved M.U Plan. Land Use PLanning is scheduled for 1977. |
