Origin of name is:Stockmore is combined names of stockman and Hore, who founded the town of stockwore in Sec. 29, TnT, R8\-1. According to father, the two men hired a returned Klondyke prospector to "accidentally" let nuggets of Gold be seen in his pouch, in a saloon in Salt Lake City. He ,.,as "Toasted" by saloon patrons until he let the secret slip, and told them, "Stockwore, just below the forks of the Duchesne River". (It was all a hoax, but, carefully planned to sell lots to the unsuspecting gold seekers.l A rush of prospectors bought lots and began prospecting for Gold. Town grew to contain blacksmith shop, livery stabel, Hotel and cafe, Boarding house, General store, 4 saloons andNumerous houses. In Nov. 1906, George vlilcken and John Toops rode horseback to Vernal to the land office to file their homestead claims. stockmore town was holding election to elect r-Ias"or and 11arshall. I'l hile at Land office Wilcken remarked abo1il.t the election taking place in stockmore and that the town was really growing. Federal Land Officer questioned vlilcken and Toops about t~~ town and its locationand cl~clred his maps. "There is no such town listed here, legally," He told the men. 'rJhen Toops and ~{ilcken got back to stockwore results of election had just been anno:unc.ed and a grand party was just getting underway. ~-li th news of illegal townsite spreading fast, Stockman and Hore left in tr.e night, persued next daJ'- by the Federal 0 ! -- 1600-12 (flUSlla.l1. 'Ilithin a very short time thereafter, no community was left. The only remaining indication is the stockmore Guard ~~~~~ Station i mile west of the original townsite. |
