Please read this before I mail such a letter to Senators Jackson, Udall and Rep. Kastenmeier. While I am trying to be brief and relevant, I don't know how much detail is needed by the people being sent the letter. In addition, I don't know how much information they can gather just from reading existing documents because what we pick up comes from "tips" and from people like Kinghorn and Lee Kapalosky. (Kapalosky just passed his bar exams last fall has worked on BLM issues and he, Kinghorn and another State employee, Doug. Kirk, have been key people providing me information. Also, Harvey Wittmeier, fisheries biologist, U.S.Fish & Wildlife Service, Ecological Services, Salt Lake City, is a brilliant help in zeroing in on many issues. Write his name down and use him. He111 help on anything. Harvey Wittmeier, Staff Biologist Ecological Services Colorado- Utah ARea Room 1311, Federal Bldg., SLC, Utah 84138 Comm: 801-524-5637 FTS: 588-5637) Also, I have included material in this letter to Sen. Jackson which I don't know whether I should be telling him in his position on the Committee on Energy. Does he see a need for IPP and Utah Power and Light power development and the use of Kapairowitz coal? The power developers in Utah say "If you produce corn for export, why not produce power for export 1 This justifies the power production in semi-desert areas for metropolis use - Las Vegas and California Is he going to support oil shale, tar sands, oil and gas, coal development in northeast and north central Utah for energy purposes - all of which development is going to raise terrible future water battles. The CUP and Uinta Range/ Green River waters are tied in with this future mineral development whether there is a transbasin diversion of water or whether all the flows are left into the Green River. Even if the CUP is stopped, there'll be a hell of a fight ahead for these waters. Is Senator Jackson coming down on the side of helping Carter's V/ater Policy first, stopping unjustifiable dam construction above all else, or does he put energy, conservation, economics, budget concerns into some kind of mix. vJaci^vx |
