Show The nation is subsidizing some 7,000 northern Utah farms at over a million dollars per farm. The cost/ benefit ratio of the Bonneville Unit of the CUP is not the 1:1 ratio the Bureau declares, it is for every dollar spent, .32 of benefit results. In order to develop costly Water supply only for Utah by the Federal government, the nation's public is not only subsidizing this but is losing significant public lands'recreation and stream and wildlife resources. All streams (rivers to non-westerners) on the South Slopes of an entire mountain range are to be dewatered or destroyed as well as significant wildlife associated with riparian ecosystems and the National Forest lands. Unless Utah residents can develop a substantial, vocal, and effective opposition group, it will be very difficult to stop the CUP. These pork barrel projects, long popular to State's elected officials, and deeply entrenched in Congressional Committees' activities, combined with the Senatorial "courtesy" of keeping out of other State's affairs as well as the powerful resistence of western legislators - all provide very powerful opponents. As I have indicated in my background information, the CUP is one of the least understood water projects. This is a direct consequence of Utah's Theocracy-State power and educating the public to accept authority. Massive propaganda efforts for CUP have offset any open discussion of environmental and cost issues in combination with long time silencing of media, the State Division of Wildlife Resources, and University staffs. Consequently, effective opposition development in Utah is a formidable task. I will approach the National Headquarters of the Episcopal Church for financial assistance toward the cost of tuition. A Madison Episcopal priest, an activist, tells me he doubts the Church would now support such tuition. I doubt my Utah-based CRCUP group would recognize the value for me to obtain professional training enough to try to raise funds for it. There are many money needs to get this organization functioning "as they recognize these needs". I would appreciate whatever insight or help you feel could be provided me. Very truly yours, Dorothy Harvey Co-Chairman Citizens for a Responsible CUP Please do not discard the enclosed Issues Paper. I would appreciate its return in the future, pending the resolution of my attending a training session. Unless it has value to you for other purposes, if all this material is redundant or unneeded, I can use it. |
