O• Brien The Supt. requests detailed information re: the construction and taking out of ditches at Ft. Lewis, including cubic capacity, time of work, and location. Prior rights of military ditches stated to be of vital importance to the Ft. Lewis School. Aug. 1, 1904 Peterson, W. M., Supt., Ft. Lewis School Letter to Mrs. Gilbert McClurg, Colorado Springs Peterson instructs Mrs. McClurg as to best travel route to Mancos, where the two are to meet. Mrs. McClurg is asked to talk with Senator Patterson re: water question. All Indians have left neighborhood of agency because of water scarcity and necessity of hauling water seven miles away from the Springs. Indians unwilling to talk. Aug. 1, 1904 Peterson, W. M., Supt., Ft. Lewis School Letter to T. M. Patterson, Denver, Co. Peterson invites Senator Patterson to visit the Agency and witness the condition of the Utes. Travel directions from Denver to Mancos included Sept. 8, 1904 Peterson, W. M., Supt., Ft. Lewis School Letter to Major A. R. Paxton, Alcatraz Island, Calif. Peterson questions Paxton, former quartermaster of Ft. Lewis, about work on irrigation ditches at the fort. Peterson describes water scarcity at the school, and the need to establish water rights for the Utes. " The water was originally appropriated by the general government, and its use has been continuous." Peterson wants to know when the ditch was first taken out. |
