McKean Brandon reported that Mancos Farm should be used to grow feed crops for the tribe's sheep herd. Asks for recommendations to put farm into operation. Also, states that monthly allowances had been reduced to only the old, indigent, and disabled, and that the Indians are expected to provide for themselves. Supv., Indian School Inspection Report, Ute Mountain School Reports material plant is adequate with the exception of the water supply. Recommends well to be drilled near school. Reports a passing rate of only 52%. Recommends transfering 9 pre-vocational students. Reports girls are receiving good training. The boys have suffered from a lack of competent instructors. Recommends a band be developed and funds provided for instruments. The Mancos farm has a good dairy herd supplying the school, but the garden is not producing. Reports coal is mined close by. Children are well fed and clothed. |
