Show Claims - 124 1901 Oldham, Kie, Attorney for Confederated Bands of Ute Indians Report to the Secretary of the Interior Covering the Period April 1, 1900 to April 15, 1901 Oldham's report on depredation claims includes: 1) work he did on listed cases during the summer; 2) a summary of the " band question," which is determination of legal status of bands composed of members of bands under amenity; 3) efforts made to avoid delays in trials; 4) a listing of cases dismissed; and 5) cases prepared for investigation. Cases listed by claimanf's name and amount of claim. May 16, 1904 Smith, Joseph O., Agent, So. Ute Agency, and E. A. Nock, Rep., Denver & Rio Grande Co. Letter to Commissioner of Indian Affairs and Manager of the Denver & Rio Grande RR Co. Smith and Nock report that $ 3,290 restitution to So. Ute Indians was unpaid, for constructed railroad in 1888 on the reservation. So. Ute Indians claim this compensation according to negotiations for 1881 between Col. Page, Agent at Ignacio, and the railroad company. Smith and Nock support the Ute claim and detail course of railway through reservation acreage and finances, including interest owed by the Railroad. May 23, 1904 Smith, Joseph 0., Agent, So. Ute Agency Letter to Commissioner of Indian Affairs Smith details the So. Ute claim to compensation for right of way of railroad constructed on the Reservation in 1888. Distance, width, and course of railway detailed. Amount of compensation according to acreage and accumulated interest also detailed. Original government price per acre equals $ 1.25. Smith strongly in favor of payment of claim. Smith investigated claim jointly with E. A. Nock of the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad. |
