July 31, 1900 Smith, Joseph 0., Indian Agent, So. Ute Agency Letter to Commissioner of Indian Affairs Smith requests funds to build a house for Ignacio, who is old. Smith justifies his request by reminding the commissioner of Ignacio's loyalty to the Department and the agency and of the promises the government made to his people, but have yet to keep. FRCD/ RG 75 Oct. 27, 1900 Day, David, Durango, Colorado Letter to Joseph O. Smith, Indian Agent, So. Ute Agency Day informs Smith that Chief Ignacio and Acawitz visited him to discuss the government failure to live up to the treaty of 1895, one aspect of which was an adobe house for Ignacio. Day asks Smith to " impress the Department with the necessity for prompt action for some kind of house for this waning and worthy old Chief." FRCD/ RG 7 5 Nov. 3, 1900 Smith, Joseph 0., Agent, So. Ute Agency Letter to Commissioner of Indian Affairs Agent is checking on previous request for permission to build a house for Chief Ignacio, who at present is living in a teepee. He adds cost of adobe building would not exceed $ 500. |
