Show Education - 196 Mar. 2, 1892 Morgan, J. T., Commissioner of Indian Affairs Letter to C. A. Bartholomew, Indian Agent, So. Ute Agency Morgan orders Bartholomew to begin collecting Ute children for the school in Ft. Lewis. Morgan has heard that Bartholomew is opposed to the school and is thwarting the purposes of the Office by not cooperating in this matter. He is to " use such compulsion as may seem wise" to enable him to secure at least 100 children for the school. Ute Agency Letter to Commissioner of Indian Affairs Bartholomew denies charges that he is not cooperating in the securing of children for the school at Ft. Lewis. He has been trying to persuade the three chiefs to cooperate and expects some success. He asks that Supervisor Keck not come yet as his presence will " spoil" everything. " These Indians are so bitter against emissaries coming and talking about the pending treaty and the school children, that they declare they will not talk to them."
