Greatest depth of the body one third of the total length. Tail compressed. Scales largest on the posterior half of the body and on the tail, granulated in the middle and with a short keel or tubercle; 24 or 25 scales between the origin of the second dorsal and the vent; no enlarged scales behind the gill-opening ; no spines on the tail. First dorsal spine about half the length of the head ; second dorsal and anal much elevated anteriorly, falciform, their depth equalling the distance between the mouth and the gill-opening. Ventral spine short. Caudal strongly notched. Brown, whitish inferiorly ; the tubercle on the scales white. Total length 1 foot 11 inches. Two specimens, dry. 162. BALISTES NIGER, Mungo Park. 163.
