Show I am enclosing a letter I've written the two top leaders in CUP opposition - Pete Carlson, Environmental Policy Center, Washington, and Dr. Fred Reimherr, Salt Lake City, a fly fisherman. As you can see - I've used the River of No Return approach as support for my contention that we have to broaden our Utah approach and policy. As you will note, this is a pretty tough condemnation of our leadership and approaches. However, our Utah group has disintegrated * partly because of the personality of Dr. Reimherr, and partly because, while his heart is in the right place and he is very Intelligent and understands the complexities of the CUP as no one else does, he can't activate people and develop a constituency.) I am at such a disadvantage working on such a difficult and complex issue in Utah from Wisconsin and, my approach hinges on developing and explaining the values of the natural resources [ (the river ecosystems) versus the political and economic approach used by Washington strategists. So, I'm TRYING to defend a position I think will have to be considered when we reorganize. 1. Am I accurate in my statements about Idaho? 2. Am I accurate about reasons for the'success' of Idaho River of No Return supporters, even though I have simplified their efforts? 3. Are there other, more significant factors in your success? You don't have to write me back a Thesis - which is about what is involved in Idaho's long period of effort. I just would like to know whether my stance is supportable. And, adaptable to Utah! I am enclosing $7.00. Will you see that a copy of the River of No Return poster is mailed to the following people.(Does this cover all costs?) Peter Carlson Environmental Policy Center 317 Pennsylvania, S.E. Washington, D.C. 2000 3 Dr. Fred Reimherr 172 K. St. Apartment #3 Salt Lake City, Utah 84103 Can you send a copy of a newspaper style appeal you people sent out a year or so ago - for funds? Unless this is too much bother. Can you attach a note to each poster telling how many of these posters have been sold, or how much $ they raised, and was this the main publicity item? Thanks for your help. Dorothy |
