Show UTAH HASN'T, ALTHOUGH DICK CARTER MANIPULATED JAKE GARN ON LONE PEAK UNTIL HE GOT THAT DESIGNATED WILDERNESS. (It should be added that Dennis Caldwell, Wasatch Mt. Club, had worked on Lone Peak for 12 - 15 years Dreviously, alone and with others - laying the groundwork!) 3><<X .«* * ^ • *»} *• «5»f*f* <5-**~* *^% oH<c* u > i l 4 < r n * s f f l*3V*y ***** UK. -T'ijinj Jud» tictici Z H. Idaho has had one or two very strong voices speaking out and challenging every single assault on the proposed River of No Return. Ted Trueblood, a Real Estate guy from Boise, and an Attorney from Cour D'Alene, whose name I forget. Proposed mining of the White Cloud Range was publicized across the nation - in every conservation publication possible. UTAH HAS HAD DAVID RASKIN, EARLIER ON, UNTIL HIS JOB WAS THREATENED AND THE SIERRA CLUB DIDNXT BACK HIM UP ON SOME PUBLIC CRITICISM OF THE GOVERNOR. We had Van Dam - who sacrificed his public career to get alternatives considered. Why haven't we used him effectively?_ more ac4i*tff We have Kinghorn. Why haven't we worked^to get groups to hear him - as a basis for our opposition support? This kind of activity doesn't get Gerry into trouble. Why haven't we made more use of David Freed and Dr. Lamb and Hartt Wixom - as public speakers? We had one good swing at public meetings with Haws - but we need to keep up the pressure., every time there is an issue in CUP development. 5. Idaho newspaper coverage has been almost as bad as Utah. The Boise Statesman is not noted for sympathizing with conservation efforts. I talked with a former part-time environmental writer for the Statesman (he was allowed only half time for these issues) after he quit and moved to Minnesota in disgust. Joe Baumann, Deseret News, can cover conservation issues provided there is an event on which he can tackle a larger issue. Was there coverage of the Instream Flow Agreement? Should we send my letter to Andrus to Joe now? Dick uses Joe all the time - under these strategy conditions. Even Halliday, Tribune, writes on environmental issues in depth, If not always on the side of conservation. Then, there's that special column where experts speak under their name and specialty. Why haven't we utilized this opportunity such as did Vern Heuser? 6. Idaho River of No Return Wilderness supporters have kept issues before the public eye - continuously - in one way or another, in a POSITIVE SENSE. (2.1 million acres of wilderness - no less) WE HAVE NOT DONE THIS. OUR STRATEGY NEEDS TO CONCENTRATE ON THE ALTERNATIVES. DRAMATIZE NONSTRUCTURAL OPTIONS AND WHERE THEY SHOULD BE USED. EMPHASIZE THE FISH AND WILDLIFE AND RECREATION BENEFITS FROM THIS. |
