Show -2- Roger Schocbl spent a day here last week', en route from BLM meetings in Oregon, and I explained the needs of a State Wilderness Rep. While Roger knows these needs, I felt they ought to be spelled out by someone other than the Rep. - just for the record! ••.-;'• Margaret, I am fully aware of the committment of the Wilderness Society to funding State Representatives in Idazho, . Nevada and in Arizona - as well as in the EAST... as their primary goal. It is critically important that these areas have the professional wilderness expertise operating there now. Nonetheless, I am making a considerable effort to minimise costs to enable me to stay in Utah and help on the work. I am still housed by Episcopal families, free of charge, and I have kitchen privileges. My gasolene and telphone bills are paid by my husband as well as needed food money. I have asked for and received smaller contributions to supplement my needs - printing costs, mailing of reports and information, a Symposium tuition, for example - from friends. With this aid, however, I ran over 61,000 deficit from earned or granted income and^expenses for. 19 77. For income tax purposes, I reported ail this as efforts to establish myself as a geeenpee-eensultant which we finally had to work out with the Wilderness' Society in order for me to receive contributions. . * My husband has suggested -I work part time. This I may have to do, and I am not unwilling, but I am 6 2 years old and,as it is, I work 7 days a week and 8 to 12 hours a day on wilderness and wilderness related issues. You have to get to agency people working, days- at their convenience. And, I have a fatigue point which Dick at 27 years old, never seems to reach! Or, can't rebound from with a good night's sleep. . Dick has offered to pay me $50 per month out of his funds but I still need more than this to function. If a family, working on environmental issues, (bio=chemist, Verterans. Admin.) leaves to spend all summer canoeing in Canada, as planned nOw, I can stay in their house in Salt Lake City. Sort of as housekeeper. .This would be an enormous help - since I could operated out of Salt Lake City - wherever Dick needs area reviews and meetings outside Sal* Lake City, as well as work here. This is not yet definite, pending the usual if, ands and buts. Otherwise I'll probably have to resort to canyon camping at $3.00 perday.. or some other arrangement. So, I am again approaching you to see what possible assistance can be arranged. I am not naming a figure of so many dollars but I am arriving at a point where I am reluctant to trade on the good will of Episcopal families indefinitely, even though I do help in housekeeping in these homes. Whatever amound of- funds can be raised to keep me afloat here in Utah, on some basis, will be appreciated. I did approach my brother for an outright grant of $2,500 but he said he has family committments - private schooling for kids, approaching college costs, etc. etc. etc. |
