Show existing public roads. The only segment currently not available to the public lies between Hogup Ridge and Lakeside. DPR acknowledges the abundant opportunities available around the lake for recreational activities such as bicycle touring. DPR actively plans for and promotes this type of recreational activity within its parks adjacent to the lake or on nearby land or corridors that fall under divisional stewardship. While a bike path encompassing the lake has not been previously considered and is not currently included in any division- specific planning effort, the division would be open to a more in- depth examination of the feasibility of such a trail. As noted in the SCCT, concerns about trespass on private land and a management strategy for recreation on the island will have to be addressed before additional access is pursued, but the recreation potential is mentioned. The additional recreational opportunities associated with the preferred alternative are primarily located where public access is available or planned by other agencies or persons. DNR supports recreational development by other entities and may offer financial and/ or technical assistance in this regard. The possibility that improved access may lead to trespass was a factor in choosing among alternatives. 9.2 a Other recreational opportunity and access topics The visitor fee at AISP should be lower to bring more people out on the lake. DPR believes that the current entry fee at AISP is appropriate. The annual costs required to operate and maintain the park typically exceed the annual revenues received from entry fees. Given the already high annual visitation rates to the park, it is questionable that lower fees would be significantly elastic to lead to additional revenue gains that would match or exceed current revenues or associated increases in operations and other associated maintenance costs. Current access also includes boat access for brine sampling and measurement of the lake bottom by the state and extraction industries. See the SCCT section of this plan. 9.3 Improve education and interpretation opportunities The majority of the respondents supported the preferred alternative, to improve existing and develop new education and interpretation opportunities on the lake. Most of the respondents supported the preferred and only one person who commented preferred alternative C and one agreed with the current situation. We support the preferred alternative and suggest looking for opportunities to pair recreation and education in our discussions. Recreation and education opportunities should be considered together. 319 |
