Show which the model calibration could be compared, many of the criticisms of the water and salt balance work offered by IMC- Kalium could be addressed. e.) It should be possible to address many issues surrounding model validation by applying the current calibration results to an analysis of the behavior of one or more specific ion forms ( K or Mg), and comparing the model outputs against historic ion concentrations. This could be done both for ions that precipitate and ions that do not. f.) The model could be used to explore the effects of the 1980s WDPP and causeway breach by simulating the behavior of the lake had these not occurred. This would shed light on the impacts that these events have had on the lake over the past several years. THE ECOSYSTEMS 1. Importance a.) GSL is an important ecological resource from a global perspective. b.) The GSL is not a single ecosystem but several ecosystems that vary spatially and temporally. c.) The PD uses the terminology " north and south arms" to describe the main areas of the lake. This obfuscates the even more important east- west contrast of ecosystems of the lake. d.) There is not sufficient information in the PD regarding chemistry and ecology interactions on which to base or justify decisions. A systematic monitoring program should be instigated to develop a base line so trends in ecosystem response to change can be recognized. 2. Trace metals and nutrients a.) More complete information on nutrient loading to GSL can be acquired from sewage treatment facilities and increased monitoring sites. Until recently there has been no pelagic monitoring of nutrients. Monitoring of pelagic nutrient levels, in conjunction with studies of brine shrimp ecology, started in 1996. It is recommended that this monitoring be continued and expanded to include more sampling sites covering more of GSL, and that sampling frequency be increased. b.) Trace metals concentrations should be measured in lake and wetland sediments. More information should be acquired regarding bio- accumulations of metals in organisms. 227 |
