Show Polly wants a prom date, Tom to the Terrace away has run, Jack and Jill climb up the hill to splash whitewash and goo on the U .... . . and Monday through Sunday found Utes at play, "seizing the day," pretending the way to a sheepskin was paved with dates and dances, cook' outs, romances, and warm May nights .... . . and they were right. Learning to play was important in the four year march to the diploma and degree. But for the first time in a long time, people asked, "How important?" An administrative committee invited students and parents to participate in an evaluation of the Greek system. Affiliates and non-affiliates filled out surveys on how much it cost to be a Greek, how much time it took, how worthwhile it was; what teachers thought, what community people thought, what Greeks and non-Greeks thought ... of the many-faceted fraternity system. Sororities and fraternities were asked not to invest more money in building until the results of the study were completed and examined. The society column disappeared from the first semester Chronicle - and reappeared in a very modified form the second half of the year. As far as the Utah Daily was concerned, the emphasis in an academic institution was academic, and the two women editors of the publication did much to direct student attention away from the Friday night functions to the Tuesday-Thursday OSH lectures. The neglected Greeks whined, but the Chronicle compromised little.Social groups effected the compromise. The Chi Omegas brought in luncheon speakers, the Pi Phis asked foreign students to join them at chapter dinners, Greeks protested against the generalities of the Week Banquet speaker. Canterbury Club attempted a scholarly study of Anglican divines. The Delta Phis invited men of many beliefs to discussion meetings. But the social current wasn't channeled into the back yard. In groups people played. Residence Halls had pajama parties and waterfights. Greeks attended prisoner-of-war, "greaser," "Hades" parties, satarizing the somber, wreathing grimmness with gaity. Luaus, Roman Banquets, Heidleburg parties took students around the world through the year. Perhaps feeling sororities weren't enough, fraternities added two men's auxiliaries. The SAE's Little Sisters of Minerva rallyed through its second year, the Phi Delta Theta's Phildelphia made its debut. What religious, residence and Greek groups didn't do, ASUU did. Homecoming opened up the field of television for Ute Events with an Extravaganza. "The Alums and You Combine at the U" was the slogan expressed through chicken wire, paper mache, paint and pledges in Homecoming house decorations. A bigger than ever parade was snowed out - and a Snow Carnival once again welcomed the sun.The Snow Carnival too took a slogan. "The Rock and Roll Beat of Frantic Feet on Crunching Snow" and not house decorations but snow sculpture appeared at Snow Basin beneath the snow shoe and ski sites. The Carnival was moved from the gym to the ballroom where students twisted between booths. The Regalia of the Junior Prom featured the Reign of Chivalry and a drawbridge and bannered walls. ...So fun seekers sloganned and sailed through an eventful and even somewhat threatening season. But through it all the Mother Goose of Group-land smiled with feathers unruffled at her dancing darti|i$.ii i/~^\VT4 \ |
